The GreenBay Packers lost another close one on Sunday. This time against the Panthers. The critical number in the GreenBay Packer loss… #2.
That’s the number of…
long passes Jake Delhomme completed to Steve Smith in the second half of the game. And it turned out to be enough.
After struggling to find any rhythm in the first half of the football game, the GreenBay Packers started clicking on all cylinders after halftime. In the end the Packers had 438 total yards while the Panthers only put up 298 total yards of offense. And the Packers had the ball in their possession for 37:52 to Carolina’s 22:08.
Aaron Rodgers had an average game only completing 29 of 45 but he did throw for three touchdowns. The probalem was, when the chips were down and the team needed him to come up big, he threw an interception.
Ryan Grant was injured so Brandon Jackson took up the bulk of the running. Jackson had a great showing averaging almost 7.3 yards per carry, but GreenBay relied on the arm of Aaron Rodgers to do most of the work.
Rodgers spread the ball around hitting 9 different receivers and getting both Greg Jennings and Donald Driver almost to the 100 yard receiving mark.
A.J. Hawk led the defense in tackles (as a middle linebacker should) with 7, but GreenBay had three defensive backs making more tackles than any of the defensive linemen or other linebackers except Montgomery, who tied the trio of DBs with 4 tackles.
On a final note GreenBay not only didn’t finish things on the last drive of the game, but they struggled all night in putting the nail in the coffin. GreenBay only completed 2 of their 4 red zone attempts.
Well, GreenBay has another chance to claw their way into the top spot in the division and a playoff appearance when they meet the Houston Texans this coming Sunday.
The Texans come into this game ranked 5th in total offense averaging 367.5 yards per game. Much of that yardage comes through the air where they are also 5th in the league. The Texans’ run game isn’t terrible, but the are a mediocre 15th in that category. Which is good news for GreenBay as they are ranked 27th in run defense.
Hopefully GreenBay’s powerful pass defense can revive itself. They’re still hanging in there at 5th in passing defense, but they’ve given up some really big plays in recent weeks and have only added one interception since the Minnesota game, and that includes a lights-out performance against the Bears.
The key stat for GreenBay, if they hope to beat the Texans this week, is 3rd. As in 3rd quarter. If the Packers play like they played in the third quarter of the game against the Panthers, they should beat the Texans and keep their playoff hopes alive. However, that’s a big question mark.
Which GreenBay team will show up this week? Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde?
